New branding for the SILVA website and dataset DOIs

SILVA joined the DSMZ and the DSMZ Digital Diversity consortium at the beginning of 2023. This new affiliation is now also visible on our website. DOIs have been added for our datasets.

We have redesigned the SILVA website to align it with the corporate design of the DSMZ and the style of DSMZ Digital Diversity. This includes a change to the structure of the website, which is now cleaner and more organised. This was the first step in renewing the SILVA website. Currently, the SILVA tools are the same as you have used for years. They will be modernised and improved in the future.

Starting with the releases of the 138 release series, we have added a DOI for all standard files we provide in our archive. The DOIs for files of older releases will be added at a later time. We have decided to use speaking DOIs, e.g. the DOI for the FASTA file containing the SILVA 138.2  SSU Ref NR 99 sequences, unaligned and truncated to the rRNA is 10.82364/138.2/SSU/Ref-NR99/FASTA/unaligned/truncated. The DOI information is provided in the archive and on the FTP server as separate file ending with .doi, e.g. for the file SILVA_138.2_SSURef_NR99_tax_silva_trunc.fasta.gz the DOI is stored in the file SILVA_138.2_SSURef_NR99_tax_silva_trunc.fasta.gz.doi in the same directory as the file itself.
